Adhesives are playing an increasing role in car assembly. They can contribute to weight reduction by replacing**mechanical fasteners, and can be used to join dissimilar materials (like steel, aluminium, magnesium,**composites, etc). However, innovative assemblies design require the use of accurate numerical models, in order**to reduce the risk of potential failure as well as unnecessary over-designs. The aim of this project is to develop**a predictive model for adhesively bonded surfaces that are commonly or potentially encountered in**automobiles. A commercial code (LS-Dyna) will be used to model the assembly, and available material models**for adhesives will be evaluated for their ability to reproduce the behavior of adhesives used by the supporting**organization. The chosen material models will be calibrated following various experimental tests at different**strain rates and/or temperatures. The models will then be validated at the coupon and component levels.
