Development of high performance, fully breathable incontinence pads

With the current demographic trend towards an ageing population, the request for healthcare products**appropriate for the special needs of elderly people is soaring. In particular, incontinence pads are used to**protect bed linens and mattresses in the case of urinary incontinence. These multilayer textile sheet products**combine a high absorbency and an impermeable component. However, issues with currently available products**include heat build-up and decubitus ulcers, which are of particular concern for bed-ridden people.**The objective of this project is thus to develop the next generation of incontinence pads by leveraging**materials properties in their design and construction. The requirements include full breathability, incontinence**functionality, temperature and pressure management, as well as retaining these characteristics after extensive**industrial laundering. This project will take advantage of the latest advances in polymer and textile science and**technology, with swelling polymer-grafted microporous membranes, wicking fibers, superabsorbent polymer**fibers, and phase change polymers for example. A special focus will also be directed at environmental**considerations, including launder-ability and recyclability.**The project builds on the extensive experience of the company Vintex Inc. in manufacturing coated textile**fabrics for the healthcare market as well as the expertise of CTT Group in designing innovative technical**textiles to develop the new generation of high performance, fully breathable incontinence pads. It will**contribute towards preserving the best possible quality of life for our seniors with minimizing the impact of the**current demographic trend on the environment, two major concerns for Canadians.
