Escherichia coli (E. coli) are bacterial germs that inhabit the intestinal areas of humans and other animals. Quick and accurate detection of E. coli is needed to mitigate outbreaks or determine the safety of food products or water sources. Genemis Laboratories Inc. ("Genemis") is a small Canadian company that specializes in microbiological water testing techniques and systems. The company's easy-to-use kits can be used as a preliminary screening test to quickly detect water quality issues. The proposed applied research project will finalize the development of a new product in Genemis' new family of products that will sense harmful E.coli bacteria in a range of concentrations. The technology uses a biosensor system that utilizes specifically tailored nanoparticles that deliver a rapid and highly selective pathogen response. Researchers at Fleming College's CAWT will assist Genemis in finalizing the development of the technology and optimizing the product. The results of the project will provide Genemis with a new product able to reliably and rapidly detect E.coli, for which there is a global need. As a result of this project, Genemis will be able to launch the first product in their new line, which will bring economic benefits to the company.
