This project will initiate a collaboration between Kemira Water Solutions Canada Inc, and Merinov, fisheriesCCTT, for the development of a process of chitosan production for water treatment from industrial byproducts(marine and insect sources). The appearance of technologies called green could offer an interesting alternativeto using of metal coagulants or polyacrylamide-based polymers in water treatment. Chitin and chitosan arenatural polymers that can be used as aid of coagulation or flocculation in place of chemical substances. KemiraWater Solutions Inc, is seeking Merinov's expertise in developing a process for producing chitosan from acombination of the most abundant sources of chitin in Canada. Chitin is found in abundance in the byproductsof the seafood processing industries (shrimp, crab, lobster) and insects.
