SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. is a Canadian company that provides engineering, procurement, and construction services to various industries, including transportation and infrastructure. The company is equipped with a Mobile Mapping System (MSS) and a Sidewalk Inspection Vehicle (SIV). These systems can extract geospatial and visual information of road networks, road-side infrastructure, and sidewalks. In particular, SNC Lavalin is interested in the automated detection of sidewalk damages. With this regard, CGQ will assist SNC Lavalin to develop image-based solutions for 1) detecting damages of concrete sidewalks and recognizing the damage category, 3) quantifying, measuring and geo-localizing the damage extent. This research project will allow the company to be equipped with a functional sidewalk damage-detection solution and be able to offer cutting-edge technologies to its clients in the infrastructure sector. For Canadian municipalities and governments, this solution can play a significant role in 1) optimizing the efficiency of their sidewalk-management plans by reducing inspection costs and time-consumption, and 2) increasing the safety of sidewalks by early detection and removal of trip hazards.
