This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Previous work has demonstrated that sleep curtailment in young adults results in impaired glucose tolerance, elevated cortisol levels, reduced leptin levels, and increased cardiac sympathetic activity. We will examine these same markers in the following ways: 1. Examining the impact of recurrent partial sleep loss in young, middle-aged and older adults. Sleep will be restricted to 4 hrs. 2. Testing whether extending bedtimes for sleep recovery will reverse the alterations resulting from sleep restriction. Sleep will be extended to 12 hours. 3. Examining age and gender related differences in the total amount of sleep recovery obtained during the week of 12-hour bedtimes. 4. Testing whether sleep capacity is partly determine by baseline levels of slow-wave sleep and slow-wave activity. 6. Examining whether sleep capacity is related to sleep need, by comparing the magnitude of changes to the magnitude of sleep debt.
