SummaryThe requested equipment (the Eppendorf Mastercycler ep Gradient Thermal Cycler) will support diverse research projects which can be categorized into three main areas: genomics, population genetics and conservation.1) Population genetics: The requested equipment will be used for studying the role of recombination in the long term evolution of sexual and asexual lineages. It will provide high through-put DNA amplification capacity necessary for screening the genome-wide genetic polymorphism in sexual and asexual Daphnia lineages. 2) Genomics: Comparative linkage mapping can provide unexpected insights into chromosome evolution, genome reorganization and speciation and can reveal the nature and scale of recombination rate variation across genomes. The requested equipment will be used for investigating recombination rate variation among closely related species of Daphnia.3) Conservation: The application of molecular approach to conservation biology has revolutionized the management of endangered species and ecosystems. The requested equipment will play a key role in the identification of routes of aquatic species invasions (e.g. ctenophore Mnemiopsis, plus five species of tunicates). This equipment will support existing research programs and timely completion of graduate research.
