We are seeking funds to acquire the mass spectrometer component of an LC-MS system to be used for small molecule analysis. Specifically, we are asking for funds to purchase an Agilent Single Quad ES detector. We will acquire funds through an alternative source for the companion 1260 Infinity UHPLC system. The availability of in-house LC-MS facilities will support the research programs of seven applicants. Four of these (Bernards, Huner and the Grbics) will use the system for plant hormone analysis. These molecules are present in very low abundance, yet have significant impact on overall metabolism (especially in response to stress). LC-MS is the most sensitive and appropriate tool for plant hormone anlysis. Other applicants will use the system for the analysis of root exudates involved in plant response to metal stress (Macfie), bacterial hopanoids (Valvano) and siderophores (Heinrichs). The data collected will address fundamental questions of plant and bacterial stress biology.
