Economic and technological factors have motivated a resurgence in shared computing infrastructure with companies such as Amazon, IBM, Microsoft and Google providing software and computing resources as services. This approach, known as cloud computing, provides efficiencies for service providers by reducing the cost of ownership over time and for users by eliminating investment in capital equipment.
