Collecting data from a sensor enclosed in a metallic structure while being a challenging task, is greatly desirable in many industrial applications including condition monitoring and wireless sensing. Conventional communication schemes fail to establish a secure communication in order to transmit data to and from sensors that are enclosed in sealed metallic containers or those that are isolated from the operator (reader) through a thick metal layer. The challenge is further exacerbated if power needs to be transmitted to data generation unit (sensor) through the metallic barrier. This research aims at developing a robust technology for a robotic drone to enable continuous monitoring of sensors (e.g., gas, fluid level, surface, etc.) in hazardous enclosed environments. Specifically, the objective of this project is to design, develop and evaluate a robust piezo-based system to transfer low-to-medium data rate signals through metal barriers.**
