In order to grow in the field of road maintenance in remote areas, particularly access roads to hydroelectric infrastructures, Minganie wishes to develop a wireless, non-satellite, very long-range communications solution, serving remote areas beyond the sectors served by the current cellular networks. Indeed, Minganie is a company owned by the Ekuanitshit Innu Nation located near Havre St-Pierre, and its objective is to eventually extend cellular coverage to the surrounding areas through an interoperable ultra-long range network, to serve remote Aboriginal communities and civilian infrastructures. Specifically, the objective of this research is to find ways to achieve a set of specifications related to network range (>150 km), link rate (>1 Mbit/s), spectral efficiency (=5 bps/Hz), low latency (<1 s), radio protocol (NLOS) and operating frequency (<1 GHz) of the base stations. Specifically, the research paradigm is to use a VHF network as a cellular communication backbone to increase the range of RF signals over long distances. This approach is comparable to the PTToC protocol but on a VHF backbone; it has never been developed and is an innovative approach to remote area connectivity. To this end, Minganie needs C2T3's expertise in telecommunications to achieve the set of specifications required for this application. For Minganie, this project is an important vector of innovation and growth designed to position itself competitively in the civil infrastructure implementation market, since it will provide solutions for expanding cellular coverage in rural, remote and northern regions.
