This project is focused on the preparation and studies of new metalla-aromatic topologies to answer fundamental scientific questions about structure, bonding, and properties of metallacycles, as well as to explore the potential uses of these systems. In addition to the preparation of vinylcyclopropene ligands, Pt, Rh, and group VIII complexes, computational studies will also be performed. Application of metallacycles in the preparation of nonlinear optical materials and conducting polyacetylene analogs will also be studied. With this award, the Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry Program is supporting the research of Professor Michael M. Haley, of the Department of Chemistry at University of Oregon Eugene. Professor Haley's research efforts revolve around the discovery, development, and exploitation of metallacycles. Such studies will not only enhance our understanding of a new class of compounds, they may also lead to the preparation of novel nonlinear optical materials and conducting polymers.
