Effects of veterinary medicines on the functional diversity of the microbial biomass in different soil compartments in dependence of varying soil moisture conditions

We observed in the 2nd phase that changing soil moisture conditions affected the antibiotic SDZ impact on abundance and diversity of functional microbial communities and enzymatic nitrogen turnover processes in soil. However, it was not possible to estimate to what extent the varying soil water contents were responsible for the observations. It seems indeed to be essential to bridge the gap of knowledge about the consequences of variable soil moisture for (fate and) effect of antibiotics being routinely introduced to agricultural soils, since considerable, natural variations in soil water contents frequently occur under field conditions. The objective of subproject B2 for the proposed final 3rd phase is therefore to investigate the influence of soil drying and rewetting on the effect of SDZ on the nitrogen cycling enzymatic activities and the respective abundance and diversity of functional microbial communities. To this end, B2 will perform a central climate chamber experiment under constant temperature conditions using SDZ-containing and non-contaminated pig manure encompassing two treatments: (i) constant soil water content (control) and (ii) drying-rewetting cycles. This central laboratory experiment will complement the Central Field Experiment with different soil moisture conditions and repeated applications of manure, in which soil moisture and temperature cannot be manipulated independently. Using the established methods we will investigate rhizosphere soil, rhizoplane and endorhizosphere and will additionally determine the diversity of the functional microbial via high throughput sequencing.
