项目摘要

2022年度は、ヨーゼフ・ロートがジャーナリスト時代に書いた、前期作品群に焦点をあて、作家の近代性を探る試みを行った。1920年代、ドイツで流行していた新即物主義の代表作として、世間に熱狂的に迎えられた『果てしなき逃走』(1927)は、作者のロート自身によって「この作品の成功は誤解に基づくものである」と評された。この言明に着目し、当時、カメラの如く表層を写しとっていた、巷の新即物主義文学と、『果てしなき逃走』における客観的描写の相違について明らかにした。そのさい、ロートがジャーナリスト時代に、南フランスの街を描写したエッセイ『白い街たち』(1925)を参照し、作家が旅行ガイドブックに書いてある歴史的事実、及び言葉の概念の裏側を、客観性を保ちながら描写する文体が『果てしなき逃走』に反映されていることを示した。これによって「あらゆるものが、ほんの一秒のうちに千の面相に変容する」近代の世界を、ロートが積極的に描き出そうとしていたことが明らかとなり、その伝統的な文化意識や歴史と訣別する態度の中に、彼の近代性を読みとることとなった。この研究成果を、2022年5月8日に立教大学池袋キャンパスにおいて行われた、日本オーストリア文学会研究発表会にて「観察の詩学－ヨーゼフ・ロートの新即物主義批判」と題し、口頭発表を行った。2022年11月22日に早稲田大学戸山キャンパスにて、「後ろ向きのモダニストーヨーゼフ・ロートが観た近代」と題した、博士論文構想発表会を行い、本論文の方向性、問題点を確認し、指導教授、及び副査から執筆継続の認可を得た。
