Development of advanced machine tool spindle structure has recently become the most important problem to materialize system machine for highly automated manufacturing system such as FMS (Flexible manufacturing system) or FMC (Flexible manufacturing cell).However, there is no effective spindle structure to realize the high performances spindle system, i.e., static and dynamic rigidities, thermal deformation, compactness, ease of operation, multi-purpose operation, high rotational speed, etc.In this research project, therefore, to establish a design methodology of advanced machine tool spindle structure, actual machine tool spindle systems based on a new design concept, i, e. twin and multi-layred spindle systems, have been proposed and investigated. Validity of the proposed spindle structures have also been verified through experimental investigations under various constraints. In addition, a design methodology of machine tool spindle system based on a new concept has been proposed and evaluated its performance through some computer simulations.
