太陽のフレア爆発は、大気内に蓄積された磁気エネルギーが急激に解放される現象である。従ってフレアのエネルギー蓄積機構の研究には、太陽磁場の精密測定が不可欠である。可視光に比べて3倍程度の高感度を達成できる、赤外線領域で動作する太陽磁場観測装置を開発した。波長1.56μmで太陽表面(光球)、波長1.083μmで上層(彩層)の磁場を観測でき、黒点の磁場やプロミネンスの観測で性能を実証した。
