项目摘要

我々は「地域研究の成立」という題目の下、次のような研究目的を設定した。すなわち、個々の地域研究の内容を単に個別的にレヴュ-するのではなく、それらを総体として捉え、そのような研究を成り立たせている「地域認識の枠組み」を抽出すること、いわば「地域研究の研究」を行うことである。そしてそこから、個々の地域認識の枠組みをその中に位置づけうるような、全体としての「世界認識の枠組みの変遷」の諸相を探ることが我々の研究のねらいである。いかなる地域も、それ自体で孤立して存在するものではなく、全体としての「世界」に組み込まれた部分であると同時に、他と区別しうるような何らかの固有性をもっている。つまり、それぞれの地域の「地域」性は、外界との相互作用を通じてはじめて形成されるものである。したがって、このいわば「内世界」と「外文明」の間のダイナミクスを解明し、世界を区画しなおす新たな単位としての「地域」のパラダイムを構築することが急務となってくる。この課題に答えるために、我々は、以下の三つの問題を提起する。1.「地域」をめぐるダイナミクス「内世界」と「外文明」の連関を解明するためには、両者を二項対立的に分けるのではなく、両者の間の境界領域に注目しなければならない。つまり、両者を覆う全体的な空間、いわば「世界システム」の中にそれぞれの「地域」を位置づけ、それらの間の相互作用を見ていくべきである。日本の場合も、「内世界」としてのアジアと「外文明」としてのヨーロッパとの境界領域にあって、その接触と摩擦の中から独自のアジア研究を生み出してきたのである。2.「地域」認識の自己準拠性地域研究とはそれ自体が「内世界」に影響を与える「外文明」の一つである。つまり、地域研究は「内世界」と「外文明」の連関を研究する「外文明」であるという、すぐれて自己準拠的な学問だということになる。したがって「他者」としての地域を省察の対象として位置づけるだけでなく、ある地域を「他者」として措定し関与する自らをも省察の対象としようとする厳しい知的良心が要請されよう。3.「地域」の主体性ある「地域」は研究対象として外部から一方的に見られるばかりでなく、自ら主体的に「地域」として行動し、「地域」として自己呈示を行なう。フィリピンの対米交渉の過程が示しているように、これは「外文明」の挑戦にたいする「内世界」の応戦として捉えるべきではなく、むしろ「内世界」の主体的営為として捉えるべきである。内世界と外文明の相互作用を考える場合、こうしたドラマトゥルギカルな局面を考慮に入れる必要がある。
