项目摘要

西洋の文学や思想の古典は、昭和期以降の日本の知的中間層(主として高等教育を受けた上層ホワイトカラー層)にとって、教養の中心部分をなすものであり、とりわけ青年期の人格形成において重要な役割を担ってきた。近代日本のエリート文化としての教養主義文化の中心であり、したがって近代日本の指導者の精神形成に重要な影響を与えてきたのが西洋の文学・思想の古典であった。ただし、ドイツのケースと比較するなら、もともと学歴エリート養成の実学的性格が強かった日本では、古典に関する教養が学歴エリートの中心的必要条件として制度化=形式化された度合は低く、殊に西洋の古典はフォーマルな形で学校で伝承されるよりは自由な読書を通じて受容される側面が強かったように思われる。日本において、大量に翻訳・紹介される西洋の書物のうちのどれが読んでおくべき「古典」なのかは、こうして出版メディアのイニシアティヴのもとに定義づけられていった。昭和戦前期に確立された全集・文庫本・読書案内といった出版形態は、読書における取捨選択の指針と体系的な教養を求める読者の要求に応えるものであった。こうした出版形態こそが、今日に至るまで日本人にとっての正統的「古典」(カノン)を事実上決めてきたのである。このようにして整備された書物の体系のなかでは、日本・東洋(主として中国)・西洋の「古典」が並列され、そこには日本の教養主義を特徴づける「あれもこれも」という折衷性、雑種性が明らかに見出されるものの、そのなかで優位が認められていたのは西洋の「古典」であった。なお、本研究では、当初の予定と異なり、大正〜昭和初期に限って当該古典の受容の社会的ルートについて解明することしかできなかった。そのため、当初予定していた研究課題の一つである、日本の知識人文化における国学・漢学と西洋文化の相対的位置関係という問題は扱いきれなかった。
