项目摘要

まず、歴史社会学・文化社会学の諸理論、特に文化とメディア・階層構造の関係に関する理論を研究・検討し、そこから近代日本のケースに適用可能な分析視角を導き出した。次いで、両大戦間期の日本における、マスメディアの急激な発展のプロセス、特に大正年間の映画会社の乱立状況から、日活・松竹の二大体制を迎えるまでの過程を分析し、この時期における日本映画と映画産業の質的な変化と大衆社会状況に対応したその近代的性格を明らかにした。より具体的には、各映画会社が所有する文献資料、観客動員等に関する統計的なデータ、新聞・雑誌の映画紹介記事などの収集・分析を行った。最後に、マスメディアの発展を契機として大戦間期日本に大衆文化が成立する歴史的過程を、特に、この時期に一大大衆娯楽となった時代劇映画が大衆文化の形成にいかに関わったのかという点を中心に、映画の内容分析や当時の新聞・雑誌記事、回想録などの幅広い文献資料を用いて解明した。その際、時代劇映画のメッカであった京都の各社の撮影所が日本映画産業の発展のうえで果たした独自の役割に配慮が必要であることをとくに明らかにした。時代劇は、産業社会化・大衆社会化が急速に進行した時代の中で「ノスタルジー装置」として大きな役割を果たしたのである。失われていく前近代的のものに対する「後ろめたさ」の心理を慰撫するために時代劇は必須の装置であり、エリートの西欧型文化の象徴的暴力に対峙する武器としてもそれは機能したのであった。
