日本人について大規模な家系調査を行い、HLAハプロタイプの分布から日本人の地域性を明らかにした。例えば、日本人で最も多いハプロタイプは北九州地方から本州の中央部にかけて特に多く、東北地方北部や南九州地方、沖縄県では少ない。二番目に多いパプロタイプは北陸地方から秋田県にかけて、そして東海地方に特に多く、東北地方東部や南九州地方では少ない。このほかにも、特徴的な地域分布を示すハプロタイプが数本認められ、その頻度の地域差が統計学的な有意水準に達するものも多かった。日本人以外の近隣集団についても、中国地京市近郊在住の漢族100組の家系調査、並びにソウル在住韓国人30組の家系調査も行った。その結果、日本人と韓国人が特に近い関系にあり、中国北部漢族はやや離れておりどちらかといえば日本人よりも韓国人に近いことがわかった。我々はこのほかにも、モンゴル族、オロチョン族、満族、回族などの集団調査にも参加している。まだ中間結果が得られた段階であるが、家系調査の結果とも合わせて、東アジアの諸民族を形成した先祖集団の移動と拡散に関して次のように推定している。1)東アジア北部から南方への移動。これには大きく二つの流れがありひとつは揚子江付近に到達し、もうひとつは朝鮮半島を経て日本列島に達する。2)南部あるいは南西部から北部への大陸内での拡散。この影響は揚子江を越えて中国北部に達する。3)南部から台湾や沖縄を経て日本列島の太平洋岸に達する移動。4)朝鮮半本付近から日本列島への移動。
