「イラン語仏典とイラン語の仏教用語の成立」というテーマのもとに,吉田豊(神戸市外国語大学教授)と影山悦子(日本学術振興会特別研究員)が共同で研究にあたった.具体的には次のような問題を扱った.中央アジアのかつてのソグド語圏で発見される考古学的な遺物と,ソグド語仏典およびその原典,さらには信仰の一端が現れるソグド人の人名の研究に関する共同の研究の結果,サマルカンドをを中心とするソグドでは仏教信仰は根付かず,ソグド語仏典は主に中国および仏教が盛んな東トルキスタンに移住したソグド人が,7世紀に仏教に改宗した結果成立したものであることが明らかになった.そしてセミレチエ地域が,仏教に改宗したソグド人が組織的に居住する地域の西の端であったことも明らかにできた.べつに,ソグド語以外のイラン語圏に於ける仏教信仰のありかたについて,従来知られていることをまとめた.その結果,仏教信仰の度合いの違いによって,専ら仏教だけを信仰する東トルキスタン型,土着の宗教と仏教が並列的に信仰されるバクトリア型,仏教圏に移住した人々だけが仏教を信仰するソグド型の3種類の類型があることを明らかにした.仏教の影響が最も少なかったのはパルティア(安息)で,わずかにパルティアの東の地域にいて通商の目的で仏教圏に入った少数の人たちが,仏教徒になったように思われる.初期の康姓の訳経僧もこれら安息出身の訳経僧と同様であったようだ.仏教用語の成立の問題では,ソグド語に導入されたインド語紀元の仏教用語を網羅的にあつめて,定着の程度や導入の経路などによって分類した.さらに仏教文化圏で重要な役割を果たしたコータンの仏教については,すこし詳しくその仏典や信仰の位置づけについて調査した.
