本研究は、明治期に登録された商標を、形態面と機能面から分類し、江戸の商人によって使用された屋号や商品に付加された標識と比較することによって、近代デザインの受容過程にある日本人の造形感覚を明らかにすることを目的としている。平成14年度は国立科学博物館が所蔵している商標公報資料を整理し、現存する商標に関する資料及び先行研究の調査を行った。さらに先行研究をふまえて、商標デザインの分類指標を作成し、商標登録制度が開始時から現在に至るまでの変遷を明らかにした。平成15年度は、年代別及び産業分野別の視点から以下の研究内容を実施した。14年度の研究結果において、明治〜現在の商標デザインにおいて、江戸までの文化的影響、海外からの文化的影響が認められたこと、経済状況が商標デザインの構成要素の複雑性に関係していることから、これらの点についてさらに詳細に分析を進めた。一つは造形要素の変遷を詳しく見るために、文字商標をのぞいた商標を用いて、商標の「複雑性」「抽象性」について時系列に分析し、明治から現代に至る造形意識の変化を明らかにした。もう一つは、西洋の影響を大きく受けたと予想される化粧品に関する分類を取り上げ、明治期における江戸までの影響、海外の影響について社会的・経済的背景から、その商標デザインとの関係について調査した。
