The aim of this research project is to make theoretical contribution for mathematical modelling and analysis of communication systems arising in the context of broadband ISDN.The contributions and observations which we have made so far in this project are as follows.1. We analysed three different types of polling models which mathematically represent communication systems operated with token-passing scheme. They are a polling model with Bernoulli scheduling, one with priority mechanism, and one with correlated input.2. We applied the theoretical results on polling models and further analysed three extended polling models. The first is a model with cycle time constraint which can be applied for FDDI. The second is one with message oriented service order. The third is one interconnected with other networks.3. We derived theoretical results on CSMA. In the first paper, we analysed message transmission delay process and interdeparture time process. The second paper considered the influence of message length on system performance measures. In the third paper, we presented and analysed a mathematical model for a CSMA network interconnected with external networks.4. We performed analysis of two queueing models. The first is M/G/1/K with finite buffer and three types of service disciplines, FCFS, LCFS and random order. The second iis M/G/1/K with vacation.5. We proposed and analysed three new access control protocols for LAN/MAN.6. We analysed two radio communication systems via satellite or meteor burst. The first paper dwelt with a communication satellite with on-board processing and the second a meteor burst communication system.7. We also performed theoretical research on other related subjects. The first is a banyan network for high speed switching. The second is Go-Back-N ARQ and Selective-Repeat ARQ. The third is bus arbitration problem arising in multiprocessor systems.
