In this study, we mainly focused on research function of university system in Japan because we felt it necessary for designing future university system. We found people's strong concern about educational and service function of universities at today's stage of massification but we also found research function of universities was at risk. Deterioration of research function and people's unpopularity of studying science and engineering are serious for future Japan.We thus studied about the history of research function at universities, analyzed the current situation of research environment there and viewed future structure of academic research. Universities should be the center of academic research and the role of graduate training is very important. We also see some new policies for enhancing research at universities have started.

在这项研究中，我们主要关注日本大学制度的研究功能，因为我们觉得这对未来的大学制度设计是必要的。我们发现，在大众化的今天，人们对大学的教育和服务功能有着强烈的关注，但我们也发现，大学的研究功能受到了威胁。未来的日本，研究功能的恶化和人们学习理工科的不受欢迎是严重的。为此，我们研究了大学研究功能的历史，分析了大学研究环境的现状，并展望了未来的学术研究结构。大学应该是学术研究的中心，研究生培养的作用是非常重要的。我们还看到一些加强大学研究的新政策已经开始实施。
