本研究では、社会的表象(social representation)としてのメンタルマップを計量・図示する方法の開発を試みた。社会的表象としてのメンタルマップとは、個人の頭の中に存在する認知上の地図=メンタルマップから、多くの人々によって共有されている特性だけを抽出して描いた地図のことである。研究成果は、以下の通りである。1.手描き法によって、個人のメンタルマップデータを大量(日本のデータ550人分、米国のデータ170人分)を収集した。具体的には、世界白地図の上に、日本、米国、フランス、カンボジア、イラクなど、7カ国の領域を記入する課題を被験者に与えた。2.描かれた地図を、ディジタイザー(図形読みとり装置)によってコンピューター・ディスプレイ上に再現する方法(プログラム)を開発した。方法の詳細は、矢守(1994)(「研究成果の図書雑誌等報告書」を参照)を参看願いたい。3.得られたCGを画像解析することによって、人々のメンタルマップから共通性だけを抽出し、そのデータをCGとして再度合成するという方法で社会的表象としてのメンタルマップを、日本人、米国人について描いた。4.3の結果、日本におけるアジア軽視、欧米重視の傾向が、各国位置の認知的曖昧さに投影されるなど、社会的表象としての認知地図を、世界観・国際感覚の深層を明示するための一種の投影法として利用する可能性が示唆された。5.今後、日米両国のデータを補強するとともに、他国のデータをも収集することで、本方法を、世界観の交差文化的研究のための一方途として確立していきたい。
