本研究は、学際的な分野の研究者による相互討論による理論的深化を大きな目的としてきた。そのため、研究メンバーのみによる研究会以外に、さまざまな外部の専門家を招いての公開研究会を6回開催して議論を深めた。初年度は、環境哲学の大きな枠組みがいかにして構築可能かという総括的な議論から出発、2年度はその環境哲学が、ディープ・エコロジーなど、既存の環境哲学の理論とどのような関係を持ちうるのかといった、先行研究に位置づけるための議論を行う一方で、環境哲学の周辺領域である、宗教哲学・宗教人類学、環境教育学、環境社会学、林政学など、関連のさまざまな学問や議論においてこの環境哲学がどのような意味を持ちうるのかを議論してきた。具体的な環境問題の事例の中で、検討してきた環境哲学の枠組みがいかにして有効になるのかという実践的な観点も含めて議論を行った。最終年度には、環境哲学の枠組みの問題を詳しく検討するために、桑子や森岡、井上、そして鬼頭が問題提起をする外部に開いた研究会でこの問題を詳しく検討した。その成果としては、井上の「環境持続性」「社会的公正」「存在の豊かさ」の3つのエコロジーの概念の提起、森岡正博の「無痛文明論」の問題提起、桑子の「空間の豊かさ」やグローバルとローカルに関連した新しい哲学の枠組みの創造がある。その中で、鬼頭は、井上の3つのエコロジーと人間―自然関係、人間―人間関係(歴史性)、個―全体の3つの領域を3×3マトリックスとして表現して、環境哲学における全体の枠組みの問題を整理する図式を提出した。そして、その中で、「所有論」の重要性を提起した。それらの研究成果は、各自が独自に論文で発表するとともに、このプロジェクトで招聘して講演、議論を行った外部の執筆者数名を加えて、『環境の豊かさをもとめて―理念の運動』(講座 人間と環境 第12巻)として、昭和堂から出版した。
