Most linguists agree that the notion of 'ambiguity' is one of the most important themes in the study of meaning. But there are few scholars who seriously tackle with the problem of ambiguity. During the term of project I have read carefully many papers and books and have dug out lots of examples of ambiguous words, phrases and sentences. And with these examples used as main data I wrote six papers (i.e., In search of further examples of ambiguous sentences', 'Whimperatives and ambiguity', 'Ambiguity and some related notions', 'Ambiguity, vagueness and semantic interpretation', 'Syntactic ambiguity and prosodic information' and 'Ambiguity, indeterminacy and illocutionary force', (Annual Report of the Faculty of Education, Gifu University : Humanities and Social Sciences) and published the technical book named On Ambiguity in 2000 with Eihosha. All the previous researches from which I dug out examples are filled with ample data and supported by the deep contemplation, so that they not on … More ly make a great contribution to the explication of the essential properties of English but also have the great value as linguistic data. And I am now preparing to write papers entitled 'Similarities and differences between ambiguity and illocutionary force', 'The number and kinds of illocutionary forces' and 'Essential differences among semantic ambiguity, pragmatic ambiguity and vagueness'. As my study on ambiguity makes progress, the essential properties of related concepts such as semantics, pragmatics, synonymy, vagueness, fuzziness, generality, garden-path sentence, prosodic information, and illocutionary force are becoming clearer. Synonymy is a concept as important as ambiguity. We can find easily many dictionaries of synonyms in Japan as well as in the other countries. But as far as I know as yet there has not a single dictionary of ambiguity published in the world. The final aim of my research is to compile and publish a dictionary of ambiguous sentences.
