本研究計画の初年度である今年度は、研究の基礎となる琉球語資料、とくに琉球王国時代の琉球語に関する文献の収集と、琉球王国の歴史、文化(特に文学)に関する文献の収集を中心におこなった。また、研究協力者である高良倉吉(琉球大学教授・琉球史専攻)、池宮正治(琉球大学教授・琉球文学専攻)を交え、琉球語と琉球における、特に琉球王国時代における文字使用の実態に関する意見の交換をおこなった。琉球王国時代には漢字使用だけの漢文も作られたが、『おもろさうし』に記載された歌、『混効験集』などの辞典や辞令書、その他の文献に出てくる地名や人名など、琉球語を表記するときには、主として仮名文字を使用していたことが確認されている。そして、琉球王国時代に琉球王府から発給された辞令書も平仮名で書かれることがほとんどであったが、薩摩藩による琉球侵略、間接的ではあるが薩摩藩による琉球支配以降に発給された辞令書では、かえって漢字の使用が増える傾向にあるのではないかということがわかった。何故そうなったのかを明らかにするには、中国や日本(薩摩藩)との政治的な関係をも視野に入れながら、資料的な裏づけが必要である。また、琉球語は内部に大きな方言差があり、その言語差が文字使用にどのような影響を与えるかについて、地域ごとの文献資料の収集が必要であり、今年度は、沖縄県立博物館八重山分館、石垣市立博物館など八重山地域での資料の収集をおこなった。
