ロシアとの共同研究により、シベリアに分布する複数種の哺乳類の地理的変異を形態ならびに遺伝子レベルから調査し、動物地理的歴史を考察した。その結果、アジア型とヨーロッパ型の分布境界線をもつ種、ユーラシア北部より南部において多様性が高い種、ユーラシア広域において地理的変異が小さい種などを見出し、更新世以降の生息環境の変動が動物地理的歴史に大きく関与していると考えられた。さらに本研究成果は、日本の動物相の歴史を考察する上で極めて重要である。
