本研究では「相手の行動や態度に対して否定的な評価的反応を示す」批判的コミュニケーションに着目し、日中韓の東アジア文化間比較に参照基準のアメリカを加えて検討した。具体的には、送り手の表出と受け手への対人的効果の双方の規定要因を検討した。1.成果の概要:4カ国の大学生の同性友人ペアを対象に質問紙調査を行った。(1)批判内容(送り手):友人間での批判の内容には大きな文化差はなかった。(2)批判の表出の規定要因(送り手):日韓では親密度および受け手との返報性の双方に規定されるが、中国では親密度のみ、アメリカでは返報性のみに規定されていた。(3)批判の対人的効果(受け手):批判はアメリカでは特に受け手のネガティブな関係評価と相関し、次いで韓国で多くのネガティブな評価と相関があった。日中ではネガティブな効果は相対的に少なかった。(4)批判時の配慮の規定要因(送り手)中国とアメリカでは親密度が低いほど、日本と韓国では受け手が脅威を感じるほど、受け手に与える脅威に配慮していた。(5)批判時の脅威の規定要因(受け手):中国では親密度が低いほど、日本では受け手の勢力が強いほど、韓国では受け手の勢力が弱いほど、脅威を感じる。アメリカでは脅威の規定要因は見出されなかった。※以上の文化差について、日中韓でインタビューを行い、解釈を助ける質的データを取得した。2.成果の意義:従来等質とされてきた日中韓のコミュニケーションスタイルであるが、例えば、中国は親密度という関係の質が大きな規定要因であるに対し、日韓はコミュニケーションの相互作用性が重要な要因であるなど、東アジア文化間の差異を示した。さらに、この文化差は評価懸念傾向の違いで説明できるなど、文化差の解釈も行った。その上、アメリカとの比較の上で、日中韓の相対的な類似度が、注目する側面によって異なることを示し、東西の文化が常に二分されるわけではないことも主張できた。
