This study aims at in situ capture of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) on blood-contacting surfaces of cardiovascular devices in bloodstream. Among various cell surface receptor/legend pairs, only surface-bound VEGF/VEGF receptor pair induced adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of EPCs in vitro. VEGF-bound stents and artificial grafts generated EPC adhesion and colonization, followed by endothelialization on porcein model. Thus, our prototype surface architecture to propose new concept of providing nonthrambogenic potential on blood-contacting devices.
