American authors in the 19th century take advantage of the manifold features of photography: both the science itself and as a metaphor in their literary works. Its diverse characteristics such as fantasy, reproduction, realism, representation, mass-duplication, closely link it with the following literary forms: romance, realism, detective and war novels in the 19th century. Photography functions not only as the technology to reproduce a subject, but as a significant factor to symbolize and develop each genre of literature.

19世纪的美国作家利用了摄影的多种特点：既是科学本身，也是文学作品中的一种隐喻。它的幻想性、再现性、现实主义、表现性、大量复制等特点，与19世纪的浪漫、现实主义、侦探、战争小说等文学形式有着密切的联系。摄影的功能不仅是再现主题的技术，而且是象征和发展每一种文学体裁的重要因素。
