12世紀～14世紀の日中交流を通じて受容された「中国」文化が、その後の日本文化に多大な影響を及ぼしたことは、すでに学界の常識となっているが、日中交流の具体相や、それを規定する環境に踏み込んだ研究は多くない。なかでも研究蓄積に乏しいのが、14世紀である。本研究は、以上の研究状況を克服することを目的としている。当該期の日中交流の担い手としてとくに注目されるのが、貿易商人と仏僧（とりわけ禅僧）である。そこで前提作業として、①宋元交替（1276年）・モンゴルの日本侵攻（1274・1281年）を契機とする東シナ海を舞台とする海商のネットワークの変容、および②禅僧の中国渡航を規定する日本国内の環境に関する先行研究と現時点での私見を整理した。それぞれの成果は、①に関しては、International Interdisciplinary Conference on Middle Period China（アメリカ合衆国）に寄せたThe "Maritime East Asian Network in the Song-Yuan Period"、②ついては、鎌倉幕府の宗教政策を主題とする「鎌倉禅の形成過程とその背景」（『史林』97巻4号）、「鎌倉幕府と禅宗」（『東アジアのなかの建長寺』勉誠出版）として発表した。また、日中交流をとりまく環境への理解を深めるため、13世紀末～14世紀前半を中心に博多の動向を整理した。その成果は、2015年にシンガポールで開催されるAsian Association of World Historiansにて口頭報告を行う予定である。ただし、本研究の中心である14世紀に日中間を往来した仏僧と彼らが所属した教団に関する史料収集については、十分とはいえず、その収集・整理・分析は課題として残された。
