This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. As in humans, cooperative breeding marmosets and tamarins show a considerable amount of father directed infant care. However, marmoset and tamarin fathers spend more time than the mother caring for infants. We found that fathers before delivery show hormonal changes that facilitate infant responsiveness. Expectant fathers of both species show an increase in body weight during their mate¿s pregnancy. Male onset in weight gain begins before their mate shows noticeable weight changes. We think these weight changes are associated with the changes in hormones in the males. The weight changes may be due to offset the energetic costs of caring for infants following birth.
