This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. HDL are important vehicles for transporting cholesterol back to the liver for disposal. Serum opacity factor (SOF), a substance produced by strep bacteria, targets HDL and selectively removes lipids from the HDL particles, producing large cholesterol rich microemulsions (CERMs). SOF may be clinically useful, in production of more active HDL particles as well as moving cholesterol more efficiently to the liver. In this project we are studying the interaction of HDL with SOF and structurally characterizing the delipidation process.
