This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Goal: To evaluate the effects on multiple cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, including plasma lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, pro-inflammatory markers and the fatty acid profile, when a plant-sterol supplemented mini-drink is consumed once a day at either breakfast or dinner at varying doses. Hypothesis: Consumption of a plant sterol supplemented (2 g/d) mini-drink once a day with breakfast or dinner will decrease total and LDL-cholesterol by at least ~5% and beneficially affect plasma lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, pro-inflammatory markers, and the fatty acid profile in healthy subjects with moderate hypercholesterolemia (LDL-cholesterol 110 mg/dL).
