This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The overall goal of this basic research is to examine developmental changes in neurotransmitter systems within the primate central nervous system (CNS), and to determine the role played by gonadal steroids. More specifically, we are focusing on gene expression changes in the glutamatergic and GABA receptor subunits, especially within the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, and cerebral cortex. We are also examining how circadian neuroendocrine circuits contribute to the maintenance of normal physiology and reproductive function. Because rhesus macaques and humans show similar postnatal neuroendocrine changes, our findings have enormous translational potential. They should help to lay a foundation for the development of new pharmacological treatments for various neurological disorders as well as infertility.
