The long-term objectives of the work have remained the same for almost two decades: to develop a theoretical framework for the prediction of macroscopic transport phenomena in porous media. The concept is based on the fundamental assumption that there exist a small number of basic pore level parameters (e.g. pore dimension distribution and connectivity parameters, and wettability) which, if known, would allow the calculation of transport properties such as porosity, permeability, Klinkenberg and Forchheimer coefficients, electrical conductivity, capillary pressure, and relative permeability. By developing theoretical models for the calculation of and accurate experimental procedures for the measurement of those properties that are easily measured (e.g., porosity, permeability, Klinkenberg and Forchheimer coefficients, and electrical conductivity), it should be possible to calculate the pore level parameters from the measured transport properties. Once these pore level parameters are available, the remaining parameters (e.g. capillary pressure and relative permeability) which are much more difficult to measure can be calculated from the theoretical models. It is recognized that such models will remain approximate in the immediate future. Therefore, the purpose is not to replace experiments but to provide a mechanism to quality-assure the experimental results.
