Collision Detection on Construction Sites

Load Systems International (LSI in the following) is a market leader in wireless and hardwired crane safety instrumentation on construction sites. A challenge for crane management is to predict the occurrence of potential collisions between cranes and other objects (static nodes) or between a crane and other cranes (mobile nodes). The objectives of the project are to: i) perform a thorough literature survey of existing collision avoidance algorithms and packages, ii) identify the collision detection approaches which could be adapted to construction site management, iii) implement first iteration prototypes of the most promising approaches, iv) implement a plug-in software architecture able to accept different types of modules (collision avoidance, visualization, physics, etc.) and v) transfer the technology to the industrial partner. A first challenge is the implementation of the aforementioned plug-in architecture to ensure that it is portable on different platforms, is able to accept different modules which can potentially communicate with each other and is scalable. A second challenge is the implementation of collision prediction algorithms that can operate in real-time and that are deterministic, computationally efficient and compatible with the plug-in architecture.
