We propose manufacturing portable low cost and user friendly biosensors based on graphene-field effect transistors (FET) to improve the diagnostic efficiency of breast cancer tumor marker (biomolecule) detection in clinical applications. FET biosensors hold great promise for early-stage detection of cancer, a strategy crucial to the prevention of cancer related death.
Perhaps the most promising application for biosensors is their use in monitoring and detecting specific molecules associated with a particular disease, such as in breast cancer patient diagnostics. Screening and diagnosis by conventional techniques does not allow us a large number of biomarkers to be detected due to technological and cost limitations. Array chip techniques for both proteomics and genomics often require several stages of amplification for reliable analysis. The time and the number of cells needed for these techniques are proving to be bottlenecks for future molecular applications in medical science. Sensors we propose in this project will enable detection of different tumor markers at the same time with very small amount of solution (a drop of blood) for precise detection/early diagnosis.
