McGill University has developed a patent-pending sol-gel based platform technology that generates bespoke, bioactive borate glass formulations with distinct chemical and textural properties. These unique biomaterials have so far demonstrated great potential in bone and teeth mineralization as well as in applications in wound healing. The sol-gel processing produces these biomaterials under low temperature, providing tunable surface and topographical features thus enhancing cellular responses and can potentially promote quicker tissue regeneration. Therapeutic ions can be easily incorporated into the glass structure, which can then be controllably released upon degradation. Therefore, this platform technology has significant potential in broad range applications for the regeneration of both hard and soft tissues. To this end, the purpose of this NSERC Idea to Innovation Market Assessment application is to undertake market research in order to explore and validate the needs and market potential of the most attractive applications for the bioactive borate glass technology platform, and to determine the optimum commercialization strategy for these highly promising biomaterials.
