Advancing Innovation in De-oiling Produced Water using Advanced Ceramic and Novel Polytetrafluoroethylene Membranes

Cenovus Energy Inc. has approached SAIT Polytechnic to collaborate on a project focused on oil and waterseparation in produced water from various formations within their conventional and unconventional operationsin the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). Novel high temperature polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)and advanced ceramic (AC) membranes will be tested for the treatment of produced water from two processes,namely, conventional enhanced oil recovery and unconventional steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD).Successful completion of the project will provide valuable results in assessing the overall efficacy of the novelPTFE and advanced ceramic membranes which will provide Cenovus with relevant technology options thatwill impact innovation and support environmental responsibility regarding water resources.
