This proposal is an extension of an earlier NSERC CRD project with Ballard, titled "Heavy Duty Fuel Cell Module Diagnostics, Control & Safety System Improvements." It is also intended to wrap up the unfinished tasks stemming from an APC project with Ballard that will end in June 2014. In this regard, the goal of this NSERC CRD proposal is to improve Ballard's fuel cell, fuel delivery system (FDS) performance by designing a model-based control strategy and on-board diagnostics system for a PEMFC stack system.
In this CRD proposal, Ballard is seeking to design and optimize a model-based platform for a fuel delivery system (FDS) incorporating a diagnostic system to provide optimal FDS control for fuel cell (FC) modules used in transit bus applications. In the proposed approach, an active fuel supply control will be developed considering transfer and external fuel leak detection in the FC stack or system components. This CRD will assist in implementing this fuel delivery system by developing models for fuel supply control in operation. This aspect of the project (i.e., modeling and improved fuel supply control ) is an effective way to extend the lifetime of the fuel cells by ensuring adequate fuel delivery over life, and also to improve the safety, reliability and durability of these systems by monitoring fuel usage in operation.
