UV-Visible Absorption Spectroscopy is a powerful and versatile technique in biochemistry and biophysics, and a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer is an indispensable piece of equipment in any Molecular Biology / Biochemistry department, required not only for quantitation and characterization of nucleic acids and proteins, but also for the measurement of enzyme kinetics, structural transitions, and the interaction of ligands with bio-macromolecules. The students and faculty in the Simon Fraser University Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry have access to dedicated Fluorescence and Circular Dichroism (CD) spectrophotometers but not to a functional UV-Vis spectrophotometer. As a consequence, this strongly research-oriented department, comprising of ~30 faculty and > 100 graduate students, has no reliable access to such a fundamental piece of research equipment as a high quality UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Most critically, the research programs of the PI and co-applicants of this application are being hampered from lack access to a UV-Vis spectrophotometer that is able to meet the specifically tailored needs of these researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology, such as the use of radio-labeled samples, turbid samples, and samples containing live organisms, such as
