When industry needs to perform an excavation in a remote, uninviting terrain, the risk to the backhoe operator is very high. Maneuvering on steep or uneven grades is a leading cause of accidents for even very experienced operators. A low latency, video remote control system for amphibious and all-terrain backhoes will allow Canadian rural construction equipment supplier Great Excavations Inc. (GE) to provide safer conditions for their operators. GE is building a technological foundation for a remote piloting hub for vehicles using the outcome of this project. The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Centre for Innovative Information Technology Solutions (CIITS) will work with GE to develop a technology that will establish a new industry safety standard for the operation of amphibious/all-terrain construction vehicles. Operators will be safer because they are no longer in direct risk of sinking and/or overturning. The backhoe work will be more efficient and cost effective because the driver will not need to travel to the remote terrain site. The prototype will reduce logistical challenges and safety issues for all-terrain vehicle pilots. This is novel solution for the rural construction industry.
