The construction of boron-element and boron-boron multiple bonds has been a major research focus of the Braunschweig group in the last few years, culminating in the isolation of B-N and B-O triple bond and B-C double bond containing iminoboryl, oxoboryl and alkylideneboryl complexes of platinum, as well as in the synthesis of diborenes and diborynes, the all-boron analogues of alkenes and alkynes. In the course of this work we were able to coordinate diborenes and diborynes to coinage metal centers and found the resulting complexes to be highly luminescent. Whereas copper(I) and silver(I) complexes of diborenes exhibit fluorescence in unusually high quantum yields of 0.18-0.95 with lifetimes of a few nanoseconds, a diboryne with three CuCl coordinated to it shows intense emission on the microsecond timescale, indicating the luminescence to be phosphorescence in nature.This project aims at the investigation and understanding of the photophysical properties of diborene and diboryne transition metal complexes. The proposed work represents the first foray of our groups with such lab curiosities into the field of materials science, exploring these fundamentally new classes of compounds in order to develop them further and make them available for applications which exploit photoactive materials.
