和製英語とは英語をもとに作られたカタカナ語の1つで、英語母語話者にとっては母語に似た外国語であり,日本語母語話者にとって外国語に似た母語であるという興味深い特徴を持つ語彙である。本研究では,まず和製英語の特徴を知るために,和製英語を集めた書籍,及び,フリー百科辞典ウィキペディア,和製英語楽天,和製英語矯正辞典などのwebサイトから新しいと思われる和製英語を収集して総覧した。その結果,和製英語を以下の四つのタイプに整理できた。第一に,英語として存在するが,英語の意味とは異なる意味で使われるもの(例:smartとスマート)。第二に,英語の単語を変形,あるいは短縮して作られたもの(例:ドライヤー)。第三に,英単語に存在しないが英語のような印象を与えるもの(例:ナイター)。第四に,英単語を組み合わせて出来たもの(例:ムードメーカー,マナーモード)。この中で第四のタイプの和製英語30語を刺激語として,英語を母語とするアメリカ人で日本語学習歴のある30名と学習歴のない30名に各語の知識と意味推測の課題を行った。その結果,(1)英語と形が良く似ている和製英語,(2)後項の語が複合語全体の意味的主要部となり,前項の語が後項の語を修飾している和製英語は意味推測が易しく,反対に,(1)英語の語順規則に則っていない和製英語,(2)英語の概念に共通する部分が少ない和製英語,(3)前項の語も後項の語も,それが構成する複合語の主要な意味とならない和製英語は,英語母語話者にとって意味推測が難しい傾向があることが示された。本研究成果は韓国日本語学連合会第4回国際学術発表大会,及びカナダ日本語教育振興会2006年度年次大会で発表した。論文としては「日本語科学」(2007年4月国立国語研究所)に「アメリカ人はどのぐらい和製英語がわかるか」が出版されたほか,「レキシコンフォーラム」(2008年3月ひつじ書房)に「韓国母語話者による和製英語の理解」が出版された。

The results of this research were presented at the 4th International Academic Conference of the Korean Federation of Japanese Language Studies and the 2006 Annual Conference of the Association for the Promotion of Japanese Language Education.
