In this study, pathogenesis of an advanced atherosclerotic occlusive lesion of the carotid artery.Summary of the results are as follows and part of them has been presented in a couple of papers.1) Clincopathological study, based on the specimens which were obtained from nearly or completely occluded lesions and by emergency endarterectomy, suggested that intraplaque hemorrhage is the most important pathogenetic factor of the advanced atheroscleotic lesions. It is also revealed that rupture of the developted vasavasorum should be cause of these intraplaque hemorrhage.2) In experimental study, preparation of animal model with advanced atherosclerotic occlusive lesions has been continued. In conclusion, sufficient model could not be produced in the past three years, although transient pathological changes were obtained.3) In addition to the cervical carotid arteries, development of intra-arterial wall hemorrhage and vasa vasorum were revieled in the intracranial arteries. Significance of these findings to the pathogenesis of intracranial dissecting aneurysm has benn also investigated.
