Tissue conditioner (TC) is readily degradable and susceptible to colonization by microorganisms. Unless a tissue conditioner is replaced regularly, it acts as a reservoir for microorganisms and can cause complications. In elderly patients who have decreased immunological activity, such complications, including pharyngeal and respiratory tract problems, are inevitable when microorganisms have accumulated on the tissue conditioners. Silver-zeolite has been shown to possess long-term antimicrobial effects against almost all microbes, and has given the continuous release of small amount (ca. 10 ppb) of silver ions into water. We tried to develop a new antimicrobial tissue conditioner containing silver-zeolite.Two TCs containing 0 and 2 % -SZ were prepared and a plastic dish was used as a control. Candida albicance and nosocomial respiratory infection-causing bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus constellat … More us and Streptococcus intermedius were selected as test microorganisms. Microbial suspension was incubated at 37 ℃ for 24 hrs on each TC disk after water or saliva immersion for 28 days. Antimicrobial effects of TCs were evaluated by counting the number of viable cells (CFU) in the suspension. In addition, after 7-days-saliva-immersed samples with or without SZ were chemically cleansed with each solution of three denture cleansers, the antimicrobial effects of those against P. aeruginosa were evaluated. The antimicrobial effects of TCs with SZ immersed in saliva for 28 days against C. albicance, S. aureus and MRSA were observed, while CFU of P. aeruginosa indicated no significant change and CFU of the S. milleri group were significantly reduced in comparison with that of the control. As for P. aeruginosa, after TC with SZ immersed in saliva for 7 days was treated with the denture cleansers, its antimicrobial effect was detected again. These results suggest that TC containing is a possible candidate for a novel antimicrobial tissue conditioner.
