初期言語習得の過程を明らかにするために、前言語期から言語期の母子相互作用を観察し、母子間で共有される場面構造と、そこで子どもがもつと考えられる言語・非言語のユニット形成を検討することを目的とした。本研究は、このための第1ステップとして、初期の習得語彙とそのコンテクストを押さえた。これは、次のアプローチのための予備的作業である。このために、初期の産出・理解語彙の種類とそのコンテクストを、母親のインタビュー調査から調べた。調査対象は13カ月児20名(平均日齢400.6日;13カ月+6日)とその母親である。対象児の家庭を訪問し、自然場面の母子観察を実施したのに続いて母親へのインタビューを行った。実施時間は約1時間であった。産出、理解の平均語数をみると、産出平均は7.3(レンジ0-19)、理解平均は35.1(レンジ14-64)であり、産出語数と理解語数との相関は、r=.322(n.s.)であり、両者が関連をもっているわけではなかった。また、カテゴリ別にみていくと、産出・理解ともに行為・状況のカテゴリが半数以上を占めていることが特徴である。さらに、これらのカテゴリごとに文脈依存(CR)および文脈自由(CF)の比率を見ると、カテゴリによってかなり様相が異なっており、人に関する語彙では産出においてCFの比率が高く、事物が行為・状況はCRの比率がきわめて高くなっていた。また、理解においても事物カテゴリでCFの率が産出よりも高くなる以外は、同様の傾向が認められた。上位のカテゴリに属する語彙の対立が反応として明確に捉えられると、母親は語を文脈とは切り離して使用していることが回答でき、それについてのエピソードも出せるようになっていた。この後の作業としては、これらの語彙が埋め込まれているコンテクストを母親の報告から整理し、コンテクストの特性の記述の試案を作成し、習得文脈の仮説を構成していく必要があると考えている。
